ONCOLOGY RENOVATION & EXPANSION PROJECT
The Oncology Renovation and Expansion Project will strengthen access to cancer care close to home by creating the specialized spaces and systems required to safely prepare medications and support chemotherapy treatment at St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake.
The $1.4 million project includes renovations to create sterile and non sterile medication preparation areas, dedicated spaces for hazardous and non hazardous compounding, clean rooms and anterooms, specialized ventilation and temperature control systems, and designated hazardous receiving areas.
The project will also include important safety enhancements for patients and staff, including emergency safety shower areas, barcode technology to support medication safety, and a video verification system for hazardous medication preparation.
Once complete, the expanded oncology space will help:
-
Provide more chemotherapy treatment locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie for care
-
Create a safer environment for patients and staff by reducing the risk of contamination, infection and hazardous exposure
-
Support the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals
-
Ensure the hospital meets or exceeds applicable standards for medication preparation and oncology care
For patients and families facing cancer, receiving treatment closer to home can mean less travel, less disruption and more time surrounded by the people and community that support them.
Project cost: $1.4 million
